Atwater Village is a neighborhood in Northeast Los Angeles that lies between the Los Angeles River to the west and Glendale to the north and east.  It also shares borders with Silver Lake to the south, Elysian Valley to the southeast, Glassell Park to the northeast, and Los Feliz and Griffith Park across the river to the west. Principal thoroughfares include San Fernando Road, Fletcher Drive, and Los Feliz and Glendale Boulevards. The Golden State 5 and Glendale 2 freeways run along the district’s western and southeastern borders, respectively.

Named by Details magazine as the one of  “The Six Hottest Neighborhoods in the World’s Greatest Cities,” Atwater Village is a collection of both World War Era tracts of California bungalows. Homes are on flat-lands with tree-lined streets with sidewalks.  Similar to Franklin Square, Atwater Village has commercial & service areas that are within walking distance. The bungalows show period revival influences.  The most famous of these are the “fantasy bungalows” on Brunswick Avenue just north of Glendale Boulevard. Atwater Village, because of the homogeneity of the homes and preservation could qualify as a historic preservation area.  Recently, actor Giovanni Ribisi became an Atwater Village residence to an architectural mid-century modern home previously owned by the world-renowned artist, Mineo Mizuno.

Living in the flats give you easy access to the “village” for local coffee shops, theatres, pilates/yoga studios, trendy boutiques, bars, restaurants and market (Los Feliz Boulevard and Prospect Avenue) as well as easy access to the 2 and the 5 Freeways.  Atwater Village is a charming starter home neighborhood.

Also, Atwater Village has some of the few homes in Los Angeles that are zoned for horses. The Los Angeles Police Department Equestrian Center and several riding clubs are located here in Atwater Village. A nine-hole golf course, which is part of Griffith Park, adjoins Atwater Village. There is a volunteer homeowners association that holds regular open meetings. Conveniently located close to 2 & 5 Freeway access and shopping in adjacent Glendale.

Tam O’Shanter was established in 1922 and is one of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles County and is still under the original ownership by the Lawry’s family. Walt Disney was a frequent patron at this spot. Tom Mix, Fatty Arbuckle, John Wayne and Walt Disney and members of the Disney studio were all regulars back in the days.  The restaurant still maintains its original Scottish ambience, a cozy cottage charm, with plenty of dark wood, stained glass windows, fireplaces and comfortable leather chairs and with the staff dressed in period uniforms.  Go to Tam O’Shanter if you’re in the mood for some Los Angeles history, along with your order of their signature prime rib at par with Lawry’s.

You don’t have to worry too much about walking into this adorable place and feeling a pinch on your wallet… Their blackboard menu is filled with affordable & yummy options, not to mention a glass case filled with delightfully fresh smelling bakery items that look like its been prepared with love and affection.

Have a freshly brewed coffee, a breakfast sandwich (eggs, avocado, cheese on a fresh baguette) or that cinnamon oatmeal pancakes, and just because, their delicious donut muffin.

It’s definitely a popular neighborhood place and you order at the counter and the friendly, smiling staff will bring the food right to you.

You will want to go back often for that  smile, a pastry, and a little dose of Village Bakery sunshine.

This is a cool cozy spot to eat, drink, and relax and have that wonderful wine tasting experience.  There is a wide wine selection with knowledgeable bartenders and staff to help you find the right wine for your palate.  The menu is concise and easy to understand, which takes the intimidation away from those who are new to wine.  The descriptions and flavors of everything on the menu – wine and food – are pretty spot on. It’s this kind of attention to detail that makes this place stand out.

The best part of this place is the ambiance in the tasting room located downstairs to the cellar/basement for flights of wine and pairings.  It’s dimly lit, and it has a sophisticated feel to the place.

Go for their wine tastings, wine flights range from $13 – $16 for 3 tastes and comes with these delicious cheese & dried fruit plates.

With such a selection, everyone is bound to find something here to they like.

This is a great no nonsense place for some good old Vietnamese comfort food, that offers a nice atmosphere, good service, fresh ingredients, and tasty food for a reasonable price.  They have a wide menu selection for the carnivorous palette.  But is really the vegetarian option that makes this the place to come for that fix.  The vegetarian pho made with vegetable broth never fails to hit that spot and fill that warm feeling in your belly. And they even have a special “spicy” broth which is peppery goodness!  They serve a good sized bowl with plenty of fresh veggies and some tofu chunks for your protein intake.

Also try their fresh tofu spring rolls wrapped with lettuce, basil & mint which is light and delicious with the peanut sauce.

Make this your vegetarian pho stop.  You won’t be dissappointed.

The small cozy place serves the best croissant in Atwater Village.  Everything here, from the sandwiches to the breads to the cakes is as good as it gets. Paired with a coffee from Cog Coffee ( located in the same shop) and you have as close to perfection for a pastry/coffee combo as Los Angeles has to offer.

Favorites include the morning bun, any of their fresh quiches, and of course the gruyere and chive biscuit is enough to make you swoon.

Order birthday cakes here and had more comments on those than birthdays cheers!

Go. Taste. Enjoy. Repeat.

So, what is Canele? It’s a small traditional French pastry with very light, moist and silky inside made out of vanilla custard, and a contrasting, but equally delicious, outside that is carmelized, dark and hard.

An intimate restaurant with communal tables and friendly servers, dishes are made from farm-fresh ingredients – made to order from the open kitchen.

Every single dish is masterfully executed –  rigidly and artistically arranged on the plate, nothing short of other snobbish white table cloth places, but filled with that amazing feeling of lightness, freshness and softness, nicely garnished with all the herbs.  Just like Canele.

This is a place to appreciate and savour food!

And true to their namesake, after the meal they offer a sweet treat…a canele on your way out.
